William is a star!
William began playing in his Son-Rise Program playroom in December 2008. He mainly sat in the corner, entertaining himself with a toy and hardly looked at us. We joined him lovingly for 6 or more hours each day. Now, he plays games with us for more than 70% of the day, talks when he wants to, and looks at us with amazing clarity and purpose. He is very close to crossing the bridge into our world and is walking closer towards recovery each day. He is so close to us in fact, that when he needs a break, he has a hard time disconnecting from us. He used to be able to sit against the wall and "zone out". We always join (mirror his actions with love and patience) him when he does this. Now, he needs to tell us "bye bye", he goes to the opposite side of the room, and he turns his back on us. We do the same, lovingly, and when he is ready, he giggles and comes over to us to show us he is ready to play!
In April 2013, we noticed he was very motivated for school. He loved visiting a local boarding school and he liked watching kids get on and off the school bus. As a result, we changed his playroom into a classroom and started introducing some academic themes like language arts, math and science. In June 2013, he started "changing classrooms" like kids his age. In December 2013, we introduced weekly themes and brought more focus and continuity to his weekly learning. He has embraced each change with gusto and continues to show us how much he understands and just how "here" he is with us. He also has 2 play dates a week, goes to gymnastics and to speech lessons once a week, and seems to be enjoying his school and weekly routine.
