In November 2014, we began using a progressive curriculum and a pacing guide for our daily lessons with William. To help us be effective in using these tools and to avoid too much repetition, we agreed to list the pacing guide topics that we covered after each lesson. We are also noting William's motivations from each class so we can create games that will be inspiring and motivating for William.

lots of animation and character voices,
playing with puzzle pieces
12/30/14 Math Climate Time periods: years and months William remained exclusive almost the whole
session, but his motivations appeared to be
drawing with the chalk or markers, duct tape,
looking at book alone, cutting paper, and
making lots of sounds
12/31/14 History English writers Manners and how people acted William was very exclusive and controlling
most of the session, but his motivations
appeared to be talking about New Years,
hanging up a New Years banner, listing things
to do for the New Year, writing 2015, reading
alone, drawing and coloring a lone. He would
not let me introduce my lesson or game at all.
1/1/15 Langauge Arts Shakespeare Characters' feelings/emotions He seemed to enjoy looking through the
shakespeare books pointing to the
pictures and drawing on construction paper
with the crayons.
1/2/15 Math Climate Money He seemed to really enjoy looking
through the Faith Like Mine book. He also
really enjoyed drawing by himself. The last
half hour of the classroom session, William
interacted a little and was really motivated
for me drawing different money bills and
writing the word money. This carried over into
recess. During recess, he was really
motivated to listen to music and reading a
a faith like mine. He also enjoyed watching
me draw money bills, flowers, suns and
writing the word money.
1/2/15 Language Arts climate different climates around the world William was very interested when we were
drawing and he was interacting a lot and
asking me to draw lines in with the markers,
and then using the tape He was very
very interested with the book "MAKBETH"
and I was reading it in different voices
according with the characters
1/3/15 Language Arts English Writers Illustrations in a book William was very interested in drawing the
sun. He kept pointing to the sun that
someone drew in the classroom. He really
watched me draw the sun and we made a
story about the sun with pictures. He was
still a little exclusive and controlling. He
was also motivated to hang a picture of
William and I in the classroom. William gave
it to me for my birthday. He kept going up to
it and really looking at it. He was also
motivated to read by himself and draw by
himself.
1/3/15 Language Arts English Writers Acting out scenes/Drawing out scenes. William was very interested in quiet
moments today. He enjoyed drawing out
each scene with silence among all the
boys. When we acted out the scenes in
different voices that was a big motivation.
Silly voices, sounds and words were big
motivators today!
1/5/15 Language Arts Religious beliefs Moral of stories William was very interested in the books and
looking at them himself while making lots of
sounds. He did also seem to enjoy being
read to with a big voice but then would take
the book back for himself and wanted to look
more at the pictures while making his own
sounds.

1/6/15 Math Athens/Sparta/Religion Using a calculator I showed william different size calculators and
a graphing and regular calculator on the iPad.
He did not take much interest in making
shapes with the graphing calculator but
seemed to enjoy using the iPad as a regular
calculator. With the iPad i was able to zoom
in and make the buttons super big with only a few
showing on the screen at a time to help with
accuracy inputting numbers correctly. He
seemed to like this and being celebrated when
he typed the correct numbers and symbols to
solve the problems
1/7/15 Science Athens/Sparta Animal Characteristics William was very motivated for drawing today
so we did a lot of drawing. I let asked him to
draw the pictures himself of the animals we
talked about as i described the characteristics.
He enjoyed being celebrated for his drawings as
i pointed out the characteristics that i saw his
drawings looked like.
1/8/15 History Athens Government and Democracy William seemed to enjoy the history channel
video i showed him about the birth of
democracy in athens. he answered my
questions about the video when i paused it and
then hit play to show he wanted to see more
1/9/15 History Athens and Sparta William was very motivated and connected when
I was exaggerating my gestures and every time
I cetebrated him he smiled, he was very
interested when he saw me excited about the
activity.
1/9/15 Language Arts Religion He was most interested in drawing with crayons
and flipping through the book independently
1/10/15 Language Arts Ancient Greece and Sparta William was very motivated and connected. He
was very motivated to draw Greek gods, drawing
by himself, looking up the differences between
the United States and Greece and writing them
down making a T-Chart using the Best Book of
Ancient Greece. He showed me what pages he
wanted to see the differences. He also enjoyed
listening about name day using 3e's and writing
down the differences between name day and
birthday using a t-chart. He wanted to tape all of
the t-charts on the wall. He also was motivated
to write greece, greek gods and name day. He
also really liked making greek gods using his
hand by tracing his stand.
1/11/15 Language Arts English Writers William and I listened to music and colored to
the beat. If the music was fast we colored fast
and if the music was slow we colored slow.
This was a way to teach William that when
writing a story/play a writer includes mood and
emotion. We colored on plates, which William
enjoyed the sound of coloring on the plate! He
showed me that he enjoyed the fast pace
coloring over the slow pace.
1/11/15 Craft Ancient Greece and Sparta William was very motivated to make a armor
shield the craft, drawing by himself. reading
MacBath which he was really listening to,
and drawing a soldier.
1/13/15 language Arts Government in Mexico and in USA William was very interested when I showed him
the photos from the Presidents. He enjoyed
helping me with the tape and usign the crayons.
I explained him that our flag in mexico is is
green white and red,
and then he took the green crayon and stared
coloring by him self the mexican flag
1/13/15 Math Biology Using a Calculator William enjoyed calculating on the iPad most. He
was very motivated for drawing today so we used
coloring circles to check our calculations.
1/14/15 Science Biology Animals William was not very interested in the game i
planned on playing with him, a virtual frog
dissection. he did not want to participate in the
game or watch me do it so we did more reading and
drawing which he seemed more motivated for.
1/15/15 History Government Laws/Constitution William was most motivated for the schoolhouse
rock video about the constitution on the iPad. he
asked me to repeat it several times and smiled and
laughed when it was on
1/16/15 Biology Animals William enjoyed using crayons to color the different
animals , he liked the picture of the birds . He
showed me several times that he wanted me to
draw his hand
1/16/15 Language Arts Biology/Govt Morals of stories William was very motivated for the animal book and
the queen book so those are the ones we read
most. He mostly wanted to read himself and kept
taking the books from me, so i used the one he was
looking at for the lesson when he gave me a green
light
01/17/15 Language Arts Government Branches of Govt William was very motivated for a rap song I played
on my phone about the branches of government.
He was also motivated to watching me draw Obama
and draw by himself. He was also very motivated to
having breaks by himself in the classroom and
playing a game wheres Roni. He was mostly
exclusive today and wanting to be alone. He was
also motivated for me to come back in every five
minutes being silly. He was making a lot of sounds
and laughing a lot.
01/17/15 Science Plants/Animals/Bio Today will was very motivated by silly tones and
motions while learning. We worked on comparing
and contrasting plants and animals. With Tom and
Joe we created a "Planimal" (Plant/Animal). William
loved creating creatures out of the play dough. He
also enjoyed drawing out what he was going to
create to have a picture to go by. At one point of the
lesson I had all the boys sit and I took on the true
roll of a teacher. I used a poster board and called on
each boy individually to give me characteristics of a
plant and animal. This worked wonderfully and all the
boys participated with such excitement. Main
motivators today included : Silly voices, Markers,
crayons, play dough, group work with teacher
instruction.
1/18/15 Craft Branches of Government Today William was motivated by various sounds
that I made while doing our "Branches of
Government" craft. We cut green construction
paper into smaller squares and taped them onto a
large tree that we drew. Once taping the parts of
the tree on, we labeled the 3 branches of
government on three separate branches of the
tree. William was also motivated once I played
music in the classroom. He began to participate
a bit more!
1/19/15 Language Arts Painters William was motivated to paint with one of the silly
paint brushes. He was also motivated to listen to
listen to a calm song from my phone about Vincent
Gogh's painting while painting a picture. He was
also motivated to read a science book about
the different land types like wet lands, desert, etc.
He was also motivated by me saying he likes the
desert since he pointed to the
desert.
1/19/15 Language Arts Painters William was interested in reading the books a lot
today, but didn't want to read any one particular
book for too long. he liked the big book about the
famous painters a lot and the crayon book. he
also seemed very motivated for drawing and would
draw along with the book with me as we read.
1/19/15 Math Painters Geometry William was more motivated for the construction
paper than the painting so we used that more. He
also seemed interested in the protractor so we used
it to measure the angles of our triangles

1/21/15 Science Habitats Resources in the environment William was very motivated for the iPad video so we
watched a little more of it than planned. He also was
interested in the art books so looked at the paintings of
things from the environment
1/22/15 History Habitats Recycling/garbage/composting William loved the bill nye recycling video.he wanted to keep
watching more and laughed out load at the jokes in the
video. When we finally got to the game towards the end of
class he got almost all the questions right.
1/23/15 Language Arts Painters William was motivated for the picasso book at the beginning
of class so we read a lot about picasso, why he painted the
way he did, and imitated several of his styles in our own
pictures. William was very motivated for the iPad but just
wanted to watch it not do anything on it. I tried to show him a
way to imitate the painting using the drawing app. he watched
but did not want to try it so we instead looked for a video. We
found on youtube a song about famous painters which he
loved and and asked me to repeat several times.
1/24/15 Language Arts Painters William was very motivated to read. He asked me to read
Just Behave Picasso several times. I read it in a fun way.
He also asked to read Paris in the Spring with Picasso
and Kate and the Sun flowers several times.
1/25/15 Craft Painters William was very motivated for squeezes and hugs today.
He asked for a lot of them today and was very interactive.
He was also motivated to read. He asked to read Painting
the Wind and A Bird or Two. He was really listening and
having strong eye contact while I was reading in a fun voice.
He was also very motivated to finger paint and wanted me to
paint his hand and then press it on the paper. He also was
motivated to take the paint brush and make dots on the
paper with the paint brush.
1/28/15 Science Natural Resources Water Cycle William was very affectionate today and seeking a lot of
control. He did not show any interest in painting or reading.
He seemed to enjoy the video i was showing him (magic
school bus water episode) but did not want to do anything
with the information afterwards. (puzzle game or making a
poster) He asked me to sing so we ended up singing
christmas songs which he kept asking for more of
1/29/15 History Circus Society/rules William was seeking a lot of control again today. He came out
of class a couple of times and sat on the big chair for a while
before he would come back to class. When he was in the
classroom he did seem interested in the lesson. he was
smiling and looking as we watched the iPad videos about the
history of the circus and participated in the fact vs fiction
game towards the end of class time.
1/30/15 Language Arts Circus Using Tech Resources I let William guide the lesson today with his motivations. I
showed him how to use google to find information and learn
about things. We typed the word circus together into the
search box and he hit search. Then I had him choose which
tab we should explore (websites, images, videos, or news). He
choose videos so we looked at videos of circuses from around
the world. We watched a russian circus act and a chinese
circus act. He had grabbed the paint supplies so we painted
while we watched and tried to paint along with the circus music
and performances as inspiration. William was connected and
smiling throughout the lesson, then about halfway through
class time he decided he wanted to be outside of the
classroom and did not want to go back in. We hung out in the
kitchen for a while and tried to continue the lesson out here but
he made it clear he needed a break.
1/31/15 Language Arts Circus Describing Words William was very motivated to read Paris in the Spring with
Picasso and A Bird or Two A Story About Henri Matisse. We
looked at some of the pictures in the book and described
some of them. He was very connected and was smiling
throughout the lesson. I originally brought in different clown
hats that were silly to describe, but he wasn't to much into it.
He was also motivated to watch me write the different
describing words. He even tried to show me why he liked it
or what he liked about it by pointing to what it was in the
picture he liked.
1/31/15 Math Natural Resources Angles William was very motivated by the popsicle sticks and tooth
picks. We worked on angles by first talking about what the
three angles are and how we could locate in the room by
making "angle finders." The boys each created their own
personal angle finer with a paper towel roll and began hunting
around the classroom for angles. William was very connected
and watching the boys find angles. He then joined in and found
angles on his own! When we created our names out of sticks
and tooth picks, I turned on music (pandora) and william was
extremely focused on the project at hand, as were the boys!
The music was a hit and a big movitator as well! Great day
today! :)
2/1/15 Craft/LA Circus What is found at the circus? William was very motivated by painting today. He enjoyed
painting a paper plate with different colors and adding pom-
pom balls as hair and a nose. We read a book about the
circus and made silly voices, which he seemed to like as well.
Once finishing the book we wrote down things that we located
in the text and taped it to a large piece of white paper that we
titled "What is at Willam's Circus?". We taped a picture of an
elephant, a tent, cotton candy, etc. William colored on the
large chart with me for a while. We put on music in the class-
room, which William was very motivated by!
2/2/15 Langauge Arts Helping Others Lessons learned from Literature Today we read several stories together and talked about the
helpers in them. We read a couple of story books and one
story on the iPad. William really seemed to enjoy and pay
attention to the story on the iPad. Before that he seemed to be
only half listening. After the stories William answered
questions about the lessons that were learned, who the "helper"
characters were, and who they were helping. He got most of
the questions right. He especially loved the last book we did, a
spongebob book that fit in perfectly with the helping others
theme. He seemed very connected during that story and
excited when i asked him questions about it. He had been
holding onto the crayons so we decided to draw a picture of
spongebob helping squidward. I drew the characters and then
william was the helper. He helped color them in for me and then
helped me get the tape to hang it up.
2/2/15 Remodeling Helping Others Learning to organize the room Today William and I started remodeling the classroom. We put
new labels on all the bins and made bins for things that were not
in bins before. He really enjoyed using silly voiced during this
process. We also put new note cards up to label areas so that
they all matched and had a place. William wanted to work on
the floor a lot today and that helped him stay grounded and work
very closely with me! He was very involved on the floor! Once
we finished i asked william for a high five and he held my hand
up and he reached out and gave an awesome high five! He
loved it! Great motivator to finish work.
2/3/15 Math professions professions that use math/banking William was seeking a lot of control today. He came out of the
classroom a few times for no clear reason. Also, in the
classroom he seemed to just want to take down and empty all
the new boxes and check out the stuff. We tried using some of
it for the banking game but he seemed to become exclusive
when i mentioned the game at all, so I eventually just went with
his motivation of reading. We read about lots of different
professions and talked about how they need to know math to do
their job, such as an engineer, mechanic, and kite designer.
2/4/15 Science Professions/helping others animals/professions that help animals William was more flexible today but also seemed to want more
breaks during class. We watched videos and read about
various professions that work with and help animals. He seemed
to really enjoy the videos and googling for information on the
iPad but needed a break every few minutes. When we got to
playing the game he would get an answer and then would again
need a break before moving on to the next. We started putting
up a poster after each answer in the game because he seemed
to really like the posters and hanging them up
2/5/15 History Professions Government Today we talked about government jobs, elected positions as
well as government jobs within the community and specialty jobs
for the federal government. We read about and looked at short
clips of each job. William was not as interested in the videos
today. He would say he wanted to watch it (by choosing to press
the button when given a choice of read or watch video). He
would only watch for about a minute though before asking for a
break. I tried using this request to move on to a different job but
when he asked for a break again I joined. this pattern happened a
few times. around the time of our second break he left the
classroom and went upstairs. He seems to really like any
mention of obama. At one point we were watching a clip about
the White House Executive Chef and he would smile any time
president Obama was mentioned by me or the video.
2/6/15 Language Arts Helping Others Lessons Learned from Stories We different kinds of stories today and talked about the lessons
we learn from them. The plan was to draw or paint pictures of the
lessons we took from each story. Willaim grabbed down the
markers and crayons as soon as we got in class so we decided
to go with that right away. I gave him paper and put out one for
myself and suggested we draw our ideas about the story as we
read and we would put them together when the story was over.
He did a lot of drawing and seemed to be listening and enjoying
himself for the two stories we got to read.
2/8/15 Language Arts Helping Others Making a Book When first entering the classroom, William was motivated by
coloring. He pulled worksheets out of my bag and began coloring,
which motivated William in the beginning of our time. Once he
Once William finished coloring the worksheets he stepped out of
the classroom a couple of times. He seemed to be pacing from
the classroom to the dining room. He handed me the remote for
the music, when I then guided William to the classroom and play-
music within the classroom. William again this week was
motivated by the music. William did go into his room for a while.
I checked on him the first time and he told me "bye-bye", but the
second time I brought the activity to him and used big
expressions, which motivated him to move into the classroom.
At the top of each paper had a different hat that represented a
different community helper. We cut out a circle so that we could
insert our faces under each hat. We discussed the different
helpers and made silly faces to go along with it, which William
was motivated by as well. We found that William was not
motivated by the charts and we are gearing away from charts for
a bit. William stepped out each time the chart was on the table.
It's exciting that we continue to learn what motivates William!
2/9/15 Langauge Arts Geography Lessons and characters Today william seemed very motivated for drawing so any time i
had his attention I lead with that. We made a mural drawing
together as we read various books about maps and the different
parts of the world on them. We tried to draw the characters and
places we found most meaningful in the stories to make one big
mural. William was most interested in the book that had a big
map in it so we looked at other maps and a map video/song on
the iPad. We drew the colors we saw on the map and the water,
mountains, trees, act we imagined were there. William left the
classroom several times for breaks as well as took breaks in
class. He did seem to be happy and participating during the
times when he wanted to. He watched the continent song on the
iPad very intently and asked for it to be repeated 3 times while
we drew.
2/9/15 Crafts/Games Geography Homework/Activities Today we talked about homework and its purpose. Joe and Tom
did their homework and William showed interest in what they were
doing. I was able to have William work on making a poster with a
map on it and we called it his homework, which he loved! He
enjoyed being able to do what the boys had to do. He then was
very motivated by being "taught." I played the true teacher role
with explaining all directions first then allowing him to complete
the activity with assistance as requested by William. He loves to
be independent and do the work on his own which is so awesome
to watch. When Joe and Tom were done their homework, William
wanted to hangout with them in the classroom. The boys made
fun posters and colored with William, which he enjoyed! Todays
motivators included: the word, "homework," saying the word really
in funny voices, coloring, taping and cutting! :)
2/10/15 Math Geography/Middle States Solving Problems Today william was wanting to be in control and not wanting to
listen to anything having to do with the lesson. Anytime I tried
talking about it he would become very exclusive or leave the
classroom. He left a few times in the beginning. I Began joining
more fully when he needed a break. He seemed to want to fully
disconnect and be clearly given space to do his own thing until he
showed me a green light. When he showed me something he was
interested in, like a certain book, blocks, or crayons, he was willing
to interact together with them.
2/11/15 Science Georgraphy Archeaological Dig William loved the box of leaves i brought in to be our dig site but
only wanted to control them and ism with them. He did not allow
me to use them for the game and burry fossils and bones in them.
He was very motivated for the Bill Nye fossil video. He watched it
very intently and laughed out load at parts. He again seemed to
need to watch in only short bits, take a break to move around, and
then come back to it.
2/12/15 Languages Geography/Middle States Tech Resources William seemed more flexible today and more willing to participate
in my ideas as well as his own. We used the google maps/google
earth app on the iPad to explore the geography of various locations
we read about in in books. We followed directions really well on
how to use his fingers to zoom in and out or move around on the
map. I let him show me which places he wanted to look at from the
book on the map and just kept going with his ideas which he
seemed to like. At one point he left the classroom and went
upstairs for about ten minutes to get a break. After that I thought
maybe he had had enough of the iPad so we started drawing maps
as we read the atlas book instead
2/13/15 History Geography/Middle States people/places/history William was very into art today and not the iPad so we went with his
motivation and did a lot of drawing. We used the maps that were in
the classroom and painted them and drew on them. My plan was
to discuss the Lewis and Clark expedition and chart their journey
through the middle states, exploring whatever details he was
interested in about the states along the way. He did not seem
interested in talking about the states much but was very into
working with the paper maps today and the art supplies. He made
oceans, land, rivers, grassland, ect.
2/14/15 Language Arts Geography places William was very motivated to making an ocean out of tape. We
decorated a shoe box and made water out of tape and drew in little
countries. He really watched me draw. He said tape and ocean a
couple of times. He was also really motivated to hang pictures of
different shapes on the wall. He would even get the scissors and
had me hold the tape so he could cut it. He was also motivated
to paint but mostly painted by himself when he wanted a break or
draw.
2/15/15 Craft Geography places William was very motivated to cut shapes out and make a map
with the shapes. He was motivated to cut them out and name
the countries we made. He also colored it by himself adding onto
it. He was also motivated for the children's world puzzle I
introduced after a bye bye. He watched me put the pieces in
where they go and even helped and showed me where they go.
2/16/15 Language ARts American Literature Understanding stories The game today was to read a book and make a comic strip story
board putting together the important elements of the story with
pictures and then play a game to put them in the correct order.
William was not interested in being read to so we did not get to
read much of the story. He was very motivated for drawing so we
instead looked at the pictures and recreated them with colorful
crayons he was using. We used the pictures to play a similar
game just not with words. William needed a few breaks today
and again was wanting to disconnect and ism during them, but
did not choose to leave the classroom at all until the last few
minutes of class.
2/17/15 Math Earth Place Values Today William was not interested at all in the Math concepts I
was trying to work on with him. At first we were using numbers.
He was shutting me down so I tried going with his motivation of
drawing and reading and tying it in with picture problems (Earths,
moons, act.) but he still resisted any time i mentioned math. I
abandoned the math and just stuck with his motivations and the
Earth theme and we watched a video and drew pictures of the
parts of the Earth. Once I abandoned the math completely he
seemed to relax and was opened to participating with me.
2/18/20 Science Earth Sound/Soundwaves Today we talked about how sound works. I showed william
sound waves using an iPhone app. We could see the sound
waves as we made sounds show up on the screen. William
seemed to enjoy this when i was talking but did not seem to like
it when i recorded his sounds (verbal or other noises like banging
markers). We did a lot of drawing and watched a bill nye video
about sound waves. He kept wanting to go back to the video
and requested it very clearly by saying iPad . He would watch
for longer periods of time and seemed to be understanding the
material because he would answer a question correctly when i
paused it to ask him one. He was very clear about when he
wanted to be exclusive and needed very disconnected breaks at
times but then was back to being very present with me at others.
2/19/20 Social Studies Earth Geography Today William showed me he wanted to be exclusive for
basically the entire class session. I tried the game ( a geography
game using a compass and a map of the world) but he had no
interest in participating and did not want me to explain it to him.
I tried going with other motivations (drawing, iPad, girls in a
magazine he was looking at, a puzzle he just took off the shelf)
but he would tell me bye bye each time and show me clearly
with his body language that he wanted a break still. I celebrated
him letting me know so clearly what he wanted each time and
just let him take the breaks he seemed to need.
2/20/15 Language Arts American Lit Understanding Literature William was very motivated for drawing today so we did a LOT of
drawing. He was not interested in drawing on the iPad, only with
markers and crayons. I gave him lots of control today to direct
the lesson towards what he was interested in. He seemed to be
pretty relaxed and participated in interacting with me a little more
than half of the time. We looked at lots of poems in books that
did not have drawings and tried to "picture" what they were about
and draw it. William made his own drawings for some and helped
me with others. He seemed to like the poems that were really
silly the best which made for abstract drawings.
2/21/15 Language Arts Earth continent Geography WIlliam was motivated to draw by himself mostly and watching
me draw the earth a little bit He was also motivated to do the
puzzle underwater when I brought that in after a break towards
the end of the class session.
2/22/15 Craft Earth Continent Georgraphy William was mostly exclusive today. The last half hour he was
very motivated for me to put together the Children Around the
World puzzle. I was putting it together in a silly way by saying
how the puzzle is tricky and singing I got the whole world in my
hands song. He was really watching me and really listening
and told me to hurry with the puzzle. He was talking a lot and
asking me to say what I was saying again and again.
2/23/15 Language Arts Chinese New Year Symbols William was uninterested in participating in anything "school" like
today. The plan was to explore symbols of chinese new year,
make our own flashcards, then play a game with them. William
was happy to read the books about chinese new year with me but
did not want to write or draw anything about them. Any time I
mentioned the game he would go to the bathroom. He also
wanted a lot of space during his breaks today. He would tell me
clearly by bye when he wanted a break and sit in the chair that is
on the other side of the room instead of his usual spot. Usual
motivations like drawing and iPad did not seem to interest him.
He did not want to watch a chinese new year video I tried to show
him. He took down a board game on his way back from the
bathroom so I tried building with that motivation when we got
back into the classroom but he made it clear that he only wanted
to play with the pieces himself. the only motivation that worked
today was reading so we did a lot of that.
2/25/15 Math Sorting Place Value William was very controlling today when it came to school. He
made it clear he did not want my game or anything having to do
with it. Any time I tried to build towards it with any of his
motivations he would go to the bathroom or get a drink or both.
He made frequent drink and bathroom trips today even during
times when he was being exclusive. He was most interested in
drawing, cutting, and painting, but did not want to do anything
school like with them. As soon as i started talking about
anything school like he would stop or leave, but he was okay to
paint with me or draw with me when we worked side by side
quietly.
2/26/15 Science/History Sorting/chinese new year music/geography Today william was showing me he wanted control again so i gave
him lots of choices and built with whatever he showed me he was
interested in when he gave me a green light. He was most
interested in reading and chose/said read a couple of times.
Reading was the only type of interaction he allowed today. Usual
motivations like iPad, music, tape, and drawing were not what he
wanted today.
3/2/15 Language Arts Desert vocabulary Today william showed me he was motivated for drawing with
crayons and listening to music.
3/3/15 Math Northern States Calculating up to 50 William was most motivated for the iPad today, looking at videos,
drawing, and listening to music
3/4/15 Science Desert Phase changes of water William was interested in a Frosty the snowman video and other
videos on the iPad (bill nye phases of matter). He was also
motivated for drawing what we were looking at in a picture or on
the iPad.

He was also
motivated for drawing what we were looking at in a picture or on
the iPad.
In February 2014, we changed the data we record after each school session with William. We are now asking him 3 or more questions during our game / lesson to check his comprehension. Below is the file of questions we are asking. This is for us to learn from each other as well as to see what topics have already been discussed during the week.

DATE LESSON THEME GOAL # BREAKS / LENGTH TODAY'S ACTIVITIES
2/5/14 Science Health & Nutrition participation, answ questions 1/10 Today we talked about healthy eating and a health pyramid.
We drew a pyramid on a poster and cut / taped them onto
the pyramid, based on whether we are supposed to eat
"a lot" or "a little bit" each day. We added exercise to the
bottom and talked about doing "a lot" of walking each day.
I showed many examples of what foods/drinks go at the
top/bottom of the pyramid and then I asked him to show
me where they went. The first time he answered them all
incorrectly. We took a break. Then I sang and really got
into the song. After singing it 2x, I told him I was going
to ask him to answer 2 questions and then I would sing
again. He answered them correctly. I sang another song
and then told him I would ask him 2 more questions. He
answered them correctly. I sang again and then changed
the format of questions. I drew another pyramid with his
help and we wrote some food items on paper. Then I
asked William to tape them onto the proper place of the
pyramid. We had talked about these food items at least
5 times and I modeled in a big way where they all went.
He taped them by himself and got about 90% correct.
2/4/14 Craft Health & nutrition participation, taking turns 1/5 William was really exited to start today lesson. we sing a lot
and he answers my question pretty well. He take turns really
good, and help me a lot with the tape and the glue stick. he
was laughing a lot and had his eyes in the activity. Then he
took a brake for 5 minutes, after that we did not wanted to
participate, but still was paying attention
2/3/14 Science Health & Nutrition listening; participation 0 William was very calm and focused today. He sat in a chair
and I sat next to him, telling him about puberty. I explained
that at his age, there are many things happening, like getting
taller, body parts growing, deeper voice, hair on the face, etc.
He looked at me, smiling and really listening. I showed him
several pictures on the internet that labeled parts of the male
body and again, he watched and listened. I also showed him
a teaching cartoon that was 5 minutes and covered 5 changes
he will feel during puberty. He loved it and we watched it
again. To test his cmprehension, I drew an outline of a male
and then wrote body parts on pieces of masking tape. I gave
each piece to William and asked him to label the body part.
He did so accurately. He also wrote the words with my help.
2/2/14 Craft with theme Community physical participation, 1/15 I did more like a review with William of different community
listening helpers he learned about all week. He showed me at first he
wanted to read so we read a book called Emergency. We
also practiced some writing. I brought in some index cards
cards and had William write fireman, mail carrier, librarian,
and teacher on each index card. I then gave William two
definitions on what a fire fighter is one silly and one the
actual definition. Then I wrote the definition on the index
card and cut out the picture of a fire fighter hat. William kept
looking at one of the posters he already made so I had him
show me where the fire fighter would go and he hung up the
index card. We then did police man the same way. He then
showed me he wanted a break. He asked why a couple of
times and got excited with hearing the words neighborhood
and emergency.
Science Community physical participation 4/ 5, 5, 10, 15 The game William and I were going to play together today
was exploring why it is important we have a filtration
system for our water. We were going to compare and
contrast the filtered water to what the water could like if we
did not have a filter. We also were going to experiment
with water, oil, and pepper. William did help to fill one of
the glasses with water and pour the oil in, but he was more
motivated by the fire fighter books, so we read those. I
incorporated our original experiment into the book by
explaining how firefighters use water and what their source
is (fire hydrants). We built a fire hydrant for the town he
had made and we also searched for smoke alarms in the
house.
Math Community comprehension, participation 5/ 2,10,12,15 Today William was exclusive most of the
time. He was not
telling me bye-bye, but was not hooking into my game a
would cover his ears and look away when I would talk. The
game was a line graph map to calculate the distance
between various parts of the community. His part was to
help me connect the dots with a ruler and pencil and to
push buttons on the calculator. He pushed the buttons a
few times when asked but was not looking at what he was
pressing to press what I was asking. The only activity he
was interested in doing together was reading, so we read
several books that were in the classroom. I kept trying to
weave them back into the lesson but he would shut me
down each time I tried.
2/1/14 Science Community participation, working together 0 Today we went talked about electricity, how it is made and
how it gets to a community and all the different parts of a
community that use it. We made a circuit from a paper
power plant to a town that william had made. We made
telephone poles around the town so the current could flow
around the town and then hooked it up to a house. William
participated in building the poles by cutting and taping and
answered questions along the way. He resisted a little at
first but would ultimately answer the question each time.
2/1/14 Language Arts Community participation, listening, 1/10 Today I told William we were going to learn about fire
answering questions fighters and what to do if you are ever in a fire. We talked
about how we stop drop and rolled and read some books
about fire fighters and some about safety tips. We also
practiced writing. I also showed WIlliam the stop drop and
roll which he found funny. He wouldn't do it. I also asked
him questions about the book such as what number you dial
in an emergency and what you do if your clothes ever catch
on fire. We also traced our hands and drew little fire men
on the fingers.
1/31/14 History Community participation 3/ 5 Today i explain william how the first people got to america
and start making the first communities and houses. He was
really good at listening and watching way i was doing and
saying, and even when we draw a little bit and help me with
some tape, he was not really into doing, just watching.
at the end he wanted to read a book, so we did it and when
he ask me to read it again i tell him that we needed to tape
the paper in the wall. so we read to pages and tape, he did
a really good job.
1/30/14 Craft Community participation, a questions 2/ 5, 8 Today we start with a lot of cutting and painting, he wasn't
really into the painting but he helped me when i ask him to.
then we cut and he really look at the paper and follow the l
lines. When all the pieces where cut and it was time to put
then together, william did a grate job, because when i ask
him from something, he usually pick the first one randomly
and it takes about 3 times for him to pick the right one.
today he was about to pick the other one, but he stop, look
and went for the other one, we did a big celebration.
1/30/14 Language Arts Community Showing understanding 3/8,5,4 Today we played a matching game where we matched
words that go together. We made word pairs having to do
with parts of the community like police, library, doctor's
office. We matched the words that go together by looking
at the spelling. I explained to him how words that go
together often begin with a lot of the same letters. We
colored in the letters that matched up in the beginning of
each pair of words. William was resistant to answering
questions again today. I tried making deals with him where
I suggested we answer the question and then do an activity
he showed interest in like singing or drawing. The first time
he went for the deal the second he wanted a break.
1/30/14 History Community Making Choices 4/2,2,5,2 Today, William and I made our own community map. We
used a poster board and markers to create the map. To
make the roads on the map, I held the ruler while William
drew the straight lines for the road. After we drew the
roads, William grabbed the Airplane book, so we read that
together. We decided to draw an airport on our community
map and then we discussed the how towns sometimes
have small airports. We worked together to decide what
"fun things we should put in our community (a movie
theater, a park, restaurants) and what important things we
should have (fire station, school, police station). William
decided where on the map these places would go. After we
drew all of the places in our community, we went back and
labeled them so other people could look at our map and
easily see what is in it. There were times throughout the
activity that William would ask to take a break, this
usually followed me asking him to make a choice or
participate. The breaks were very short and he would come
back to continue working on our project!
1/29/14 History Community Participation; answer quest 1 / 2 I first showed William pictures of our town and people he knows in
our town. I told him we were going to cut them and put them on a
poster, where I had drawn a diagram and labeled different parts of
our community. I modeled by cutting a few, matching them to the
words on the poster (e.g. "children", "ambulance") and then taping
them. After doing a few and since William was watching me, I
asked him to cut, match and tape. I gave him specific instructions
and with help, he followed them. A few times I guided him and a
few he did it by himself. I then told him that in 1964 President
Johnson started a Community Action program to help children,
families, poor, etc. I showed him the pictures and poster to relate
to the history he was learning. We ended by focusing on our town
and community, and by writing words. I told him he was writing
hard words like Government, and he smiled. I also asked him a
question about who the program helped. I gave him 3 choices.
I asked him 5 times in 4 minutes. On the 5th time, he answered
me.
Craft Community Participation 3/ 2,2, 10 Today we made a church with an envelope, it was really fun and he
like it. we use tape, and scissors. we was a little bit controlling today
but not so much, and he take a few brakes and i had to go to the other
side of the room. but he participated and did a really good job. we sing
a lot too.
1/28/14 Math Community participation, counting 2/ 20, 30 Today william was really exclusive, and he take long brakes and he
was going to the bathroom for long times. he wanted to read and
draw by his own, so he keep telling me bye bye every time i wanted
to bring my activity out. at one point he was really into singing, so i
told him that i will keep singing if he give me two high fives. so we
did that singing and counting for about 15 minutes. the last 20
minutes we did the activity and sing some more.
1/27/14 Language Arts Community Participation 2/ 5 We talk today about the community. i explain to him what was it and
we made a collage about it. we use some pictures and he show me
the ones he wanted to use. we sing a lot too and dance! we would
do a picture and then sing a song. He was really good at looking
and showing me the pictures. i ask him once about what we were
talking about, and at the beginning he just pick a random one, but
at the ends he did it really well.
1/26/14 Science Transportation Participation 2/10,5 Today in Science, we built our own bottle rocket ships! In this
activity, we wanted to explore how rocket ship makes into space.
To demonstrate that, William poured vinegar into an empty soda
bottle. He then poured a teaspoon of baking soda onto a square of
tissue paper. We folded the tissue paper up so we could put it into
the bottle. The tissue paper around the baking soda gave us time to
back away from the rocket before it blasts off! Before lift off, we
decorated the bottle, labeling it "William's Rocket Ship." William
watched from inside as set off our bottle rocket on the deck in the
snow. It worked so well, we decided to experiment and add more
baking soda to make it go higher. It worked!!! To finish off the
activity, we drew pictures of rocket ships and decorated them with
outer space stickers.
Math Transportation Participation, working together 4/7,8,10,12 Today william seemed to need longer breaks. He would often take a
long break when I tried to check his understanding by asking him to
show me an answer. He seemed to like using the calculator and
would point to the right button on there when i asked him to show me
something, such as "which one is the division symbol." The lesson
was about speed and angles. We launched hot wheels cars from a
ramp at various angles. We calculated the speed by measuring the
distance they traveled and timing the trip. We experimented with
different angles of the ramp to see how they affected the speed ofthe
car. William looked and smiled but physically participated minimally
in the activity. The only part he was interested in helping with was
the calculations on the calculator.
1/25/14 Science Transportation Participation, Comprehension 3/10, 7,5 Today's lesson was about buoyancy and why boats float. I brought in
a plastic boat as an example and we dropped it in the water right
away. Then we took two pieces of playdoh the same size and
shaped on like the boat and the other as a ball. We dropped both in
the water and noticed how the boat shape floated but the ball sunk.
Then I read to william a bit about how boats displace water and stay
afloat. We placed several other kinds of boats in the water and
looked at the side of the bowl to see the water displacement of each.
William did not want to answer my questions when i would try to
check his understanding today. When I would try he would push the
paper away. He did participate in the experiment and listen to me
read.
1/25/14 Language Arts Transportation Participation, listening, 1/10 William was very interactive today. He was very interested in my
writing topic which was airplanes. We read a book called Lets Fly from A
to Z which was all about airplanes and what makes up a airplane.
We practiced writing some words we read about while we were
reading such as pilot and baggage. At the end I asked William some
questions about what we read such as who is the person who flies
the airplane and made it fun by having him make choices with my
hands. He seemed to enjoy it and liked when I gave him silly
answers. I also asked William to show me his favorite page
since he kept going back to the page with how people get meals
on the plane. We practiced writing the word food and talked about
what kind of food is served on the plane. He asked why a couple of
times today. We also made an airplane which he help decorate and
color out of paper. We also practiced writing some words which he
copied with little help. He was very giggly and happy today and
very motivated to read and just want to listen mostly today.
1/ 24/14 History Transportation Participation, taking turns 2/ 5, 10 Today the lesson start out really well, we talk about the evolution of
of the cars, how they change through time. He was really into it and
helping cut the pictures and using the tape. i sing something and he
ask for more, so i told him that i would sing more, after cutting or
taping. that went really well and he did it at first. the second half of
the lesson, he was less focus, he would just cut without paying
attention. he took one brake and went to the bathroom, and another
in the classroom.
1/23/ 14 Craft Transportation Participation 3/ 2, 15, 10 William was really good today, he was into the game and really focus
at one time he went out to the bathroom and stay there for about 15
minutes, wen we go back we keep doing the craft and i ask him
some questions about the stop light and the colors, he did answer
but he needed some space, so he went again to the bathroom,
and he did not wanted to go back in, at the end he did it but he went
one more time and stay in there until the end of the session. But he
was really good at really paying attention and being focus.
1/23/14 Language Arts Transportation Comprehension 2 / 5, 5 Today we did a game where we scrambled up the letters of
transportation words and tried to put them in the right order. I had
william choose the letter that came next or identify a letter out of a
choice of three. After he showed me a few times that he could make
the right choice (even after repeated in a different order) we moved on
to words. I gave him a few choices and had him show me which was
the correct word to match the picture of the boat, dump truck ect.
William made the right choice more than half of the time with the
letters and almost always with the words.
History Transportation Participation 2 / 8, 6 William and I made boats out of tin foil. I asked him to help fold
the foil, cut the mast and put plastic penguins on them in the
water to see how many the boats could hold before sinking. I
told him about Christopher Columbus sailing to America and we
made several boats. He participated a lot and focused when I
asked him to.
1/22/14 Craft Transportation Participation 2 / 2 Today we talked about the concept of fast and slow. I showed him
cars, trucks, airplanes to show him what goes fast. Then I rolled
slow toys across the room to show him the concept of slow. I
wrote the words on paper and asked questions about what was
slow and fast. I also sang fast and slow to show him the
difference. He chose for me to sing slow or fast. I moved around
the paper choices and continued to ask him what he wanted and
he showed me by pointing to the papers. He did it correctly most
of the time until he lost interest and looked away.
craft Transportation Participation, follow instructions 8/ 2 William was in a really good mood in today lesson, so than make
everything else really simple. We made a little car out of a toilet
paper tube and a bigger one out of a box. I ask him to cut through
the lines of the paper, write something or pick an specific color.
he was not doing it the first times, but after a few try's he would
focus and do it, but he would need a little brake afterwards. there
was a time when i ask him to cut something and he got really
controlling for about 10 minutes, he would go get food, or go to the
den and start to listening to the owl. but that was the only time he
was controlling. the rest of the session went really well and he had
fun.
1/21/14 craft transportation participation, aswering questions 5/ 5,3,2 William cart the session really good, he was paying attention and
answering my question really good, it would take two or three trys
but he did really good. when he ask for a brake, usually he would go
out of the classroom and to the bathroom. after the first half of the
lesson he start to go really controlling, and do things that he knew
he wasn't suposed to do like chewing on the dot markerss, and use
them in the floor. but he was really into using the tape for the craft
and into singing
1/20/14 Lenguage Arts transportation Participation, taking turns 4/ 5, 8, 3 Today William start the session really exclusive and asking for a
break. after he take a break we start to do the activity and he was
really good at helping me and writing. when i try to make him take
turns (he draw something, then me) at first he was doing it, but then
he stop and ask for another break. When I started asking him
questions, he picked random answers without looking. For example,
I showed him 3 pictures and ask for the one picture how had the
transportation, but he just pick a random one. so when i explain him
that it would be better if he look carefully at the pictures and pick
one he started taking more breaks. I was challenging him in a
different way today.
Craft Transportation Physical partic, language 5 /2,3,5,2,2 We made a car out of paper and tissue paper; he dumped out my
bag and found a puzzle with all modes of transportation. He tossed
the pieces around the room then pulled down the art box and
dumped it everywhere. He then drew a bit and I picked up the room.
He then left the room, found his iPad and showed me he wanted
me to sing. I told him it was great how he was showing me what he
wanted. I sang a few times and he jumped on the trampoline. When
I paused, I asked he made a sound for more; I told him that we
would now use the word "repeat" and I asked him to say it. He tried
several times and once made a good approximation of the word.
His interest was fleeting. He then showed me a craft box and we
made a paper bag elephant. He was very focused and participatory
in this activity that he chose!
Language Arts Transportation Participation, listening, 3/5, 5, 5 William was very interactive yet still controlling in a way. He first
writing pulled out the book about Martin Luther King Jr wanting to read it.
He knew today was Martin Luther King Jr birthday which I thought
was so cool. We read the book and then I asked him some
questions about what we read to see if he was listening and had
three choices written. I asked him what we read about and had
three choices that said "mom", "Martin Luther King Jr" or "Rosa
Parks" since she was mentioned. He choose the right one. Then
I mixed it up to see if he would still get it and he got the right one.
I then asked him what did Martin Luther King do since the book said
he was a pastor. I had choices such as pastor, teacher, or singer.
William choose singer and I said your right he did sing in his church,
but he was also a pastor. We then practiced writing pastor and
Martin Luther Kings name since he showed me he wanted to write.
We then started to read about cars and what cars and how some
transportation is on land and some is in air and some on water.
He sat and listened the entire time. I also showed him a picture of
a car and an airplane and asked him which was a car and he gave
me the right picture. I also had two worksheets we did one was a
word search we circled words together and the other had different
transportations and you had to write if the vehicle was on land,
water or air. William wanted me to write so I asked him air plane
and gave him two choices written with air and land and asked him if
air plane is in air or land. He got a majority of these right. Towards
the end he was looking at the magazine and was looking at two
girls and I said oh your looking at the girls do you think they are
pretty and he smiled and giggled. I told him it was normal for boys
his age to think a girl is pretty. He then went to the chair and told
me what sounded like back as if he wanted to look at the girls
by himself.
1/17/14 History Current events participation, writing 1/ 5 william was really happy today (maybe because its his birthday)
he was wanting squeezes and singing. We did a little magazine
about the current events in Mexico, what is happening. He write
a little bit, but mostly he just wanted to watch or read a book, and
then, join me in the activity. He seem really happy today and flexible
he sat on the table with me maybe 3 times, with i find than make
him more focus on the game. when he sat down with me he made
some drawings and writing and the leave and come back.
1/16/14 Lang Arts Current events taking turns; writing 2 / 2 Today William was very connected and present. He looked at me
a lot when I was explaining our game, reading or helping him write.
Before class, he got a haircut and he watched a show on the
making of the Hindenburg. I showed him a book of "Headlines"
which included the Hindenburg and I read a little to him. He
listened. Then he chose to write and we drew a picture of it. He
used his iPad a lot to show me he wanted me to sing or that he
wanted to write. I also experimented with a few language apps
which focused on writing short words and pronouncing them. He
enjoyed the game part and watched me model the word; he did not
try to say the word when I requested. I also showed him today's
Wall Street Journal and I read a few lines of 3 stories.
1/14/14 Craft current events taking turns 1/ 5 Today we made a little tv with some important news. he was really
into the taping and helping me but most of the time he just wanted
to watch or walk around the classroom. He was really motivated
with some pictures of Ariana Grande, so when we finish the tv
he just keep steering at the pictures. we play at the end of the
lesson with a ball, and take turns to throw it away. today he was
fun, and he seem to enjoy it.
1/13/14 Craft Current events listening to something new 0 I introduced William to a newspaper and showed him how to
see current events ("things that are happening today") around
the world, in sports, in health, in business and in weather. We
made "William's Newspaper" with "Headlines" like "William wants
to travel to see Big Ben" or "Music: William's favorite song is..."
science current event participation, following instruction 2/ 2, 3 William was really good today. we started with an activity about
the last theme (Winter), he was really into the cutting and using
tape. he fallow the instruction really well and listen what i was
telling him. he was into this big book about some places of the
world, so we did some drawing and writing about that. at this time
he just wanted to watch and he take a brake.
1/12/14 Science Winter Taking turns; physical participation 0 Today we had science outside. We hung peanut butter bird
feeders; we made a den for a bear to hibernate, by using
sticks in the woods; we made a leaf bed for a turtle to
hibernate in; we found a tree with a hole for a small animal
to hibernate in; and we looked for deer during a walk. Then
we came inside and reinforced the lesson by drawing
and writing each thing we did.
Craft theme Winter Participation, taking turns 2/5, 5 William was very interactive today. He showed me he wanted
to read a lot today. I brought in different books about snow and
winter. He wanted to read the books so we read a few of the
books over and over again. He also showed me he wanted
to paint so we painted a red fox since one of the books he
loved was about a red fox. He only took two short breaks
today. He also showed me what books he wanted me to leave
which ones I could take home. He said read a few times and
laugh for again a few times. When it was time for recess I gave
William the option of going outside for recess or stay in the
classroom and continue reading and he choose to stay in the
classroom and read. He also showed me at the end he wanted
to drum so we drummed and sang about foxes.
Math Winter Participation, taking turns 6/6,4,10,8,3,2 William took several breaks today. He was very clear that he
wanted breaks and left the classroom several times, even when
he did not need to use the bathroom. He would come back in
when asked to but then made it clear he still wanted to be
exclusive. We did a lot of joining. We did eventually get to
talking about the lesson I had planned but catered it to what he
was interested in, the paints. The lesson was making
symmetrical snowflakes while talking about geometric shapes
and axis of symmetry. We used the snowflakes we had made
as patterns to make symmetrical prints with water colors.
1/11/14 Science Winter Participation, taking turns 5/5, 10,2,3,2,1 William was very clear when he needed breaks today he would
look at me and say break. He participated in the experiment
when he was ready and looked and listened while I was
explaining the science behind it to him. The experiment was
learning about why frost forms in the winter. We put lots of ice
and salt in a coffee can. The salt caused the freezing point of
the ice to drop so the can was full of freezing cold water and
air. This made the can super cold. The super cold can caused
water in the air to freeze as it came in contact with the can.We
observed the frost all around the bottom of the can where the
water was and tested what happened if we did different thins
with the can such as turning it upside down or scraping of
some frost and watching it form again.
Language Arts Winter Participation, listening, taking 2/5, 5 William was very interactive today, but did ask for two breaks
turns which were both pretty short. We made a snowman out of
paper plates and he cut the circles for the "snowballs" out
himself. We also cut out a nose and a hat and William decided
he wanted to draw the buttons so we drew them in. William
also showed me he wanted to write a few times today so we
practiced writing a few of the words William is learning on the
list. I also brought in a bucket and we talked about the
different article items we wear in the snow like a jacket, gloves
scarf, and a hat. We played a game where we had to throw
each item in the bucket. William liked the game and
participated by throwing whenever item that was requested.
This was a good way for William to practice listening skills.
1/9/14 Language Arts Winter Participation, Comprehension 5/5,5,8,6,3 Today william william asked for several breaks, but did not go
to the potty frequently. My lesson was about poetry. The idea
was to write a simple poem together about our favorite things
about winter. We read some sample poems in a book and
brainstormed some of our favorite winter things by drawing
pictures and making a list. Then we tried to rhyme each thing
we thought of with a rhyming word to help construct our poem.
I gave william choices of a few words that would rhyme and
had him circle his choice. We did not get past this step to the
actual poem since he needed longer breaks today.
History Winter Participation, comprehension 2/ 15, 3 William start really good today, he was listening and really
into the writing, reading, singing, etc. we cut come pictures
about some animals that migrate, hibernate and adapt to the
cold weather; he really like that so we keep into the theme
for the first half hour. Then he take a brake and went out of the
classroom, i tried to make him go back few times, but he did
not wanted to, this last for about 15 minutes. When went back
we keep playing and we make a collage about what we just
talk. he take another short brake. Over all, he was really
participative and into doing anything.
1/6/14 Craft Birthday Participation; writing 1 / 2 William helped wrap a present for his sister, Ashley, whose
birthday is tomorrow. We talked about all of our winter
birthdays, focusing mostly on Ashley. He made a card by
writing "Happy Birthday Ashley, love William" with very little
help. I said the letter and he would guide his and my hand to
write the letter. With some words, like "Ashley" and "Happy",
he guided my hand before I said the letter, showing me that he
knows how to spell those words. I then taped together 2
papers and we made a book for her called "Memories of
Ashley, by William". I suggested a few memories, like "Ashley
used to call me "nam", or "Ashley did a puppet show for me
one Christmas". He chose the memories that we wrote by
smiling or laughing at the ones he liked. I wrote the first 2 and
he initiated helping me (and guiding me a lot) write the others.
He was more settled, connected and participatory today than
in the last week.
Language Arts Winter Participation; taking turns 2 / 20, 5 Today we talked about what birds do in winter (migration)
and we made bird feeders from pine cones, peanut butter
and bird seed. William helped spread the peanut butter and
dribble on the birdseed. We also read several books on
migration. After a long break, he was fairly attentive and
requested a lot of reading.
Science Winter Participation, comprehension 2/ 35, 10 In the first 35 minutes of today lesson, william was really
exsclusive, he was in his own activities and he did not want
my help, or singing or squeezing. after that long brake i
bring my game back, a he really pay attention (i explain him
why winter its cold). then we made a drawing about what we
just talked about. we sing and read for a while and then he
wanted another brake; after that he was really into drawing
happy faces, so we did that until the end of the session.
1/5/14 Math Time Participation, Listening 6 / 2,6,5,4,3,5 Today william was very exclusive and seeking control. He
was not interested in math and would shut me down when i
talked about the lesson or related anything to time. I tried just
going with what he seemed motivated for like sining, drawing,
painting. He would allow me to do these things with him for a
few minutes and then would suddenly walk out and go to the
bathroom or tell me break. He was also showing that he
wanted to control the paint and markers and only use them
how he wanted.
Science Time Physical Participation 4 / 2, 2,2,2 Today William was more connected and interested in watching
our game. He even participated more, and with ease. He
took 4 quick bathroom breaks but quickly came back to me
and our activities. Our game was "racing" and we made a
racetrack on the floor with tape. I asked him to choose the
vehicles to race; he did. I wrote the vehicle name and he
pointed to show me with one won each race. I sang when
he asked and to extend his participation. I then paused and
requested him to choose a car or to show me who one. I also
modeled the countdown for each race. And, I counted how
long it took different cars to reach William (3 seconds; 5
seconds, etc.) After a break, he showed me he wanted to
draw. I drew different types of races (skiing, running, driving,
etc). He participated by handing me markers and watching
and listening. He practiced writing a little too.
1/4/14 Science Time Participation, taking turns 5/5,3,10,3,5 Today we did an experiment where we timed 5 different
methods of melting snow to see which was the fastest and
why. We heated the snow samples on the stove, in the
microwave, sitting out at room temp, in warm water, and by
squeezing it in our hands. We used the clock to time each
method and determined the microwave was the fastest. Then
we talked about the reasons why certain methods were
quicker than others and wrote some conclusions. William
was pretty controlling with the snow and needed frequent
breaks/visits to the potty. He did let me get throw the
experiment in brief periods of interactiveness and towards the
end sat and listened for a while I talked to him about the
science behind it.
Language Arts Time Writing, taking turns 6 / 2,1,2,2,3,1 This morning William was very controlling and exclusive. He
took my markers, walked away and said "bye". I joined and
each time I started to build, he went the bathroom. He
actually used the potty and only stayed a minute or 2. I told
him he could have a break without going to the potty so he
ismed with his back to me. He clearly showed me he wanted
control so I "gave, gave, gave". I sang his favorite song a few
times. He smiled. I sang again. Then he jumped on the
trampoline. As he relaxed and showed signs of coming
towards me, I paused and asked him to help me write thank
you letters to his friends for his Christmas gifts. Doing this,
he wrote 2 short notes. I cheered him and showed him his
work. I continued singing and requested only when I had a
strong connection, which was the last third of our 1.5 hour
class. Right now, we want to "give, give, give" until he shows
more flexibility and is participating with more interest.
1/3/14 Math Time Physical participation 4 / 3, 5, 5, 8 In math, William left the classroom several times to ism.
During class, he wanted to draw and read. He watched me
show him how to measure my height and then subtract to
show how much taller I was then him. Then we drew and
read more.
Cooking Time Participation, taking turns 2/ 15, 15 Today we made banana bread. William was into the mixing
the ingredients, like the eggs the honey and specially the
bananas. then he take a long break after that we write some
words in the board, and at the end he take another break
until the end of the lesson.
1/2/14 Language Arts Time Comprehension, Listening 3/ 10, 10, 5 William was exclusive for long periods again today but did
eventually let me get to the lesson and seemed to pay
attention for a little while. We talked about writing words in
past tense, present tense and future tense. We found verbs
in storybooks as we read and wrote down the three forms of
each. William helped me write a few words but would
request a break when I asked him to help so I shifted to
writing them myself while he looked and listened and helped
me turn book pages occasionally.
12/31/13 History Time Participation, working together 1/90 William was exclusive the entire session today. He was
clear that he wanted me to give him a break and lots of
space so I joined fully. I attempted to reintroduce my theme
at a few points and he immediately shut me down by telling
me break or turning away. I offered other activities like
reading or drawing together but he was not interested in any
of them so I gave him control and joined.
12/31/13 Language Arts Time participation, writing, listening 4/10, 15, 15, 15 William was very exclusive and controlling today. We did
not get to my lesson today which was to make a clock
midnight how we celebrate the new year at midnight. I also
brought books in about time. William was interested in
reading the books a little bit. He said bye bye a few times.
Most of the time he was exclusive and wanted to join. He
even showed me how he wanted me to hold a book like him
or blanket like him so we joined mostly. At one point, he
wanted a few squeezes and hugs and sat on my lap.
Most of the time he was controlling and exclusive.
12/30/13 Craft Time participation, writing, listening 4/5, 5, 10, 5 Today I had a clock made out of a paper plate and two
hands made out of foam paper to make and show William
how to tell time on a clock. William wasn't so interested
in the craft. He wanted to read so we read and practice
writing the words he is learning. He asked why a couple of
times and said book or read a couple of times.
12/29/13 Craft Christmas participation, writing 4/ 2, 2,10,2 today William was really into the craft, he write all the words
pretty good, but he needed a short break between each word.
he take a long brake once and wanted to read by himself,
he use the scissors really good too, and he was really into
squeezes and reading, so we read a lot too.
Science Christmas Looking into microscope, writing 2 / 1, 3 We explored his microscope from Santa, learning to focus
with 1 eye in the eye piece. I showed him how we can see
through objects and what they are made of with the micro-
scope. We looked at a pine needle and ornaments of
different textures (angel, reindeer, santa). We drew and
wrote the names of the ornaments.
Math Time Participation, Comprehension 3/10,8,5 William took a few long breaks today but for the most part
was more connected. He listened and watched while we
made a chart counting down the years, months, days,
weeks, hours, minutes and seconds until new years. We
also did the same for his birthday, my birthday, next
christmas, ect. William did not want to help write numbers
on the chart but he did participate by pressing the equals
sign on the calculator each time as I showed him how to
calculate the answers. We also did some painting and
reading which he seemed very motivated for.
12/28/13 Science Christmas Participation, working together 3/ 15, 10, 3 William was very exclusive and seeking control today. He
allowed me to go through the santa egg experiment while he
watched after a quick
break and then was exclusive for mostly the rest of the
session. He had wanted to listen to music on the iPod and
I told him a few times early on that it was time for science
now but we could listen to music when it was time for
recess. Right as it was time for recess William came out
from using the bathroom. I told him its recess time now and
we can do what he wants to do together, and William
responds "iPod."
Language Arts Christmas writing, reading comp 2 / 3, 5 Using his iPad communication app, William frequently
asked for songs. After singing a few times he wrote the
names of the Christmas songs. He also requested reading
several times and we read Christmas books. He was very
engaged and interactive.
12/27/13 Writing Christmas Participation, writing 5/ 3, 2, 2, 5, 10 William start the class today really exclusive, then, after a
few minutes he show me the writing box, at the beginning
i try to help him whit some worlds, but he wasn't paying
attention at all, he just wanted squeezes, so after a long
round of hugs and singing, we start to write about the new
years eve and what we do in this time of the year (celebrate
, eat, dance, etc.) he take a few brakes at the course of the
activity. at the end he went to the bathroom and take a long
brake. we did a lot of singing as well during the lesson.
12/26/13 Language Arts Christmas Participation, word recognition 6/5,6,10,10,10,3 Today william was mostly exclusive. He did not want to do
the game I had brought in and kept showing or telling me
what he needed a break. He was willing to do some of his
ideas such as painting and reading together, but would still
not totally connect. He also asked for space. Even when I
was already joining him he would turn away or make a
sound requesting space so I moved across the room and
joined from a distance.
12/24/13 History Christmas Participation, taking turns 4/ 8,5, 5, 3 Today i brought in william's christmas gift which was a math
game. He wanted to open it right away so we started off by
playing that. We took turns rolling the dice and doing the
math problems to move our pieces toward the finish line. we
played the whole game and william finished first. He took a
few breaks but participated in the game when we were
playing. Later for history we drew a map of the world and
started plotting a suggested route for santa to take tonight.
He wanted to do a lot of reading and signing christmas songs
so we did a lot of that as well.
Craft and theme Christmas participation, listening, working 1/2 We didn't get to the craft today. I brought in paper bags to
together make reindeer with Williams hands. William showed me he
wanted to read and write so we did a lot of that. We read
a lot of the books about Christmas I brought and practiced
writing some of his words and the alphabet letters. William
was very interactive happy and giggly today. He asked a lot
of why's today. He also said "ho ho ho Merry Christmas"
and tree. We also had five minutes left in the classroom so
William helped me clean up the whole classroom himself.
12/23/13 Language Arts: Christmas participation, taking turns, 1/5 Today, I brought William's Christmas gift in. I had a basket
Williams present working together filled with different art supplies. The art supplies was finger
different craft finger paint, scissor activity pad, tape and markers. I also brought
paint, tape, scissor books about Christmas. William wanted to read a lot and
activity pad, markers we also played with some of the things I brought him such
as the finger paint, scissor pad and the markers to practice
writing his words. I told William Christmas is about
spending time with family and friends and we learned about
how Jesus was born on Christmas.
12/22/13 Craft and book Christmas Participation, listening, working 0 Today we read books about Christmas and did a craft for Jane
together, taking turns, writing Lynn. He was very motivated to read today. We made put
ornaments out of foam on a foam christmas tree. There is a spot
where Jane Lynn can put Williams picture in. The craft also
came with a foam box that William can decorate with foam
ornaments to. He helped put the ornaments on the tree and the
box. We also practiced writing all of the words WIlliam is learning.
He said tree at least three or four times today. He also said why
at least five or ten times today.
Science Christmas Participation/working together 1/20 Today we melted snow in Science for our theme of Christmas.
We sprinkled salt onto our snow to make holes and we dyed
dyed the snow red and green to show the melting pattern of the
snow. William helped and participated in shaking the salt,
coloring the snow with food coloring and answering the
questions. We also learned about reindeer in their natural
habitat and took a short quiz! To end our session, we colored
reindeer with markers and dot to dots.
Math Christmas Working together 3/ 5, 5, 3 Today we made christmas shapes with play doh. We talked
about the different three dimensional shapes that make up a
christmas tree, (cone, cylinder, sphere ornaments, cube
presents). We make lots of different shape presents to put
under the play doh tree as well and talked about different
things that could fit inside. We also read several christmas
books. he kept wanting to me to read t him today and would
ask for another book as soon as as we finished reading one.
12/21/13 Science Christmas Participation, working together 1/5 Today we made chromatography christmas lights. We cut out
christmas light shapes of of coffee filters and made dots on
them with different color markers. We dipped a pipe cleaner in
water and stuck it through the paper lights. We hung them on
the tree and watched as the water spread out through the
paper and carried the color along with it. We noticed how the
different pigments separated and traveled at different rates
making cool patterns on the lights. William was more
interested in observing than participating. He did not ask for
any breaks, but he did not come over and participate when I
asked him to. He would participate if i brought something to
him and asked him to tape it or hang it on the tree to dry.
12/19/13 Language Arts Christmas Word recognition, writing 2/10,5 Today we made a book and wrote our own christmas story. I
used the white board to write choices of words or events that
could come next in the story and then he circled or pointed to
his choice and we added it to the story. We drew a few
illustrations before we ran out of time. William was a little
unclear today whether he was connected or not. he was not
asking for a break but seemed to be tuning me out at times.
He did make a choice when I asked him to though and we did
get the whole story written.
History Christmas Participation 2 / 2, 3 Today we make a book about the christmas trees, we use
tape, pictures, scissors and crayons. we wrote some words
like his name, ornament, ghost, tree, angel, start etc. He was
focus almost the hole time in a serious way, not in a giggly
as he is most of the time.
12/15/13 Performing Arts Marine Life participation, 3/5, 5, 10 Today we learned about clown fish. We read a couple of
listening, matching, books about coral fish and learned about how they grow
taking turns up like we do. We also played a game of gold fish where I
had a couple of cards with different number of fish on the
cards. For example, I had some cards that said 2 gold fish,
3 big fish, 4 small fish, 5 algae, and 6 shark. We played for
a little bit. I also had a word search and another game of
cutting out the clown fish to give them homes. William was
very motivated to read today and talk about the books. We
read a lot and William listened a lot today about how clown
fish grow up like we do and how he is going to be a teenager
soon, go to college one day, maybe even drive one day. He
loved talking about it.
Language Arts Marine Life adding, matching 3 / 10, 3, 2 Today we played a math version of go fish. We fished for a
card with a pencil. each time we made a match we multiplied
the number times two and added it to our total score. we
played this for a while and then william seemed very
interested in reading. he asked me to read a lot and really
seemed motivated for the books about marine life (coral and
sharks) so we talked about them a lot and practiced writing
some of the words of the week.
12/14/13 Science Marine Life Participation, Comp. 5/ 2,2,5,5,3 Today we classified animals into marine life and non marine
life. We made a collage putting the land animals up on the
land and the marine life down in the water. We further
separated the marine life by where in the ocean the typically
live (near the surface, swimming in the middle, or on the
ocean floor.) William took frequent breaks but kept coming
back to participate or would participate if i brought the collage
to him on the couch.
12/14/13 Language Arts Marine Life writing, participation, 3/ 5, 5, 3 Today we learned about sharks. He was very interested in
listening reading about them. We also made shark teeth out of paper
plates that did not come out so good which William was
laughing at me. I told him how sometimes things don't come
out the way you want them to. We then made a fish out of
a paper plate. William helped me color the fish to give him a
body and some gills. He asked for a lot of squeezes today.
William also practiced writing the word shark and ocean
today. He seemed more motivated to read which he started
to take out other books in the classroom and wanting to read
them. WIlliam also allowed me to do a review of what we
learned about in the classroom and did. He was very excited
to hear about the words we wrote and what we learned about
sharks. He also said why about three or four different times
today.
12/12/13 Writing Marine Life writing, talking 1 / 3 Today we did a word search and practiced circling the names
of fishes. When he wanted to draw, we drew fishes and wrote
the words of the week (from the word search). William
requested me to sing. I said "wait" and he repeated the word.
I cheered and he showed me he was really motivated for this
word. So I sang, paused and told him that today, the magic
word for me to sing was "wait". I sang, paused and he said
"wait" at least 8 times. I noticed that he said it very clearly
when he was drawing while I was singing and pausing. When
he wasn't drawing, his word was less clear. Also, the longer
we played the game, the less motivated to say the word he
was.
Language Arts Marine life Writing/Letters 3 / 10, 10, 3, 5 William was interested in listening today but not much
participation. He wanted to sit while I read to him and allowed
me to talk about the lesson as well. We read books about
Marine life and tried to write the name of and draw a picture of
an marine animal that begins with each letter of the alphabet.
He did not want to be in the kitchen and kept leading me back
to the classroom to sit in the reading corner.
12/10/13 Language Arts Marine life writing 4 / 2, 3, 2, 5 William was lethargic today and lay on the floor 3 times. I
encouraged him to sit down at a chair so we could write and
he did. Once, I used him laying in my lap to massage his
mouth and ask him to say words like "ing" more clearly.
Another time I used a blanket to give him squeezes to wake
up his body. He did listen to a book on the beach and sea life
and wrote the words "shark", "fish", "ocean" and "seaweed".
DATE LESSON GOAL # BREAKS / LENGTH SPECIAL OBSERVATIONS 12/8/13 Performing Arts: Black Friday shopping for participation, 1/5 William was very interactive and present with me today. He
squeezes, singing, drumming, hugs listening was very motivated to read, write and squeezes. My game
was a choice to buy squeezes, hugs, drumming and singing.
William kept choosing to buy squeezes. He also wanted hugs
today. He wanted to read the same book more than once. He
only went on a break for three minutes one time and then
wanted to play more. We played for the whole hour and half
today! He loved my game to and was able to show me one
dollar and five dollars!
Science: Our Experiments With Salt Physical Participation 3/2,4,10 William was very excited to do Science today. We finished
two experiments with salt! William kept tasting the salt and
smiling at us as he would taste it. We saw the chemical
reaction with salt and ice and the the chemical reaction with
salt and flour. William participated with pouring salt, tasting
salt and listening to our observations. During breaks, we read
books, colored, and painted with paint.
Language Arts: Letter Magnets Participation/Comprehension 1/5 William was very present with me today. He stayed
connected and participated with me making words with the
magnets. He kept trying to put the letters in his mouth and
would give me a sneaky grin when i would catch him and
then we would both start laughing. He kept asking me why
when i would request him to do something and he gave me
such a genuine smile when I explained to him why its
important to learn to write.
12/7/13 Science: Classifying Animals Participation/Comprehension 4/ 4,5,10,2 William was very controlling with me today. He kept doing
things he knew he should not even after being asked not to,
such as coloring on books, chewing on pens, ect. He did
participate a lot in the game and was able to complete the
whole game. He seemed to pay attention and understand
because he got about 90% percent of the animals right when
I asked him to choose where they go.
Language Arts: Learning about Christmas participation, William was very interactive today with me. He was very
trees and making christmas tree craft listening 1/ 5 interested in the books I brought in about Christmas trees
and the crafts I brought in to make. He wanted to read first
so we read two books I brought in. Then he showed me he
wanted to use the glitter glue so I told him we could use it for
one of the crafts which was a tree craft. He glued dots on
tree. He only requested for one break today and was only
exclusive for about five minutes. We joined at that time and
at one point turned around. After five minutes he turned
around and sat up and showed me he had glitter on his
hands like he wanted to wash them so we went and washed
them. When we came back I told him we should take a break
from glitter and he throws it aside like he agreed. It was
funny. He then showed me he wanted to hang one of the
crafts with tape and do it on the wall so we made it that way.
He was very happy and giggly today and asked why a couple
times today. He also wanted a lot of squeezes and hugs
today. The last fifteen minutes he kept requesting for hugs
and was laying on the floor. I told him it was kind of hard to
hug him laying on the floor and if he sat up I can give him a
better hug. He sat up, turned around, and then sat right on my
lap. He requested for a lot of hugs and wanting me to give him
squeezes on side of the face with my arms and squeeze his
arms. There was a blanket on the floor he got earlier and
pulled it on top of us like he wanted to cuddle. It was really a
picture perfect moment. He wanted a lot of love today it
seemed like and loved how I was telling him I loved him and
love giving squeezes. He made a lot of different sounds today
and was talking a lot. He wanted a lot of hugs and squeezes
today and was being very lovable.
12/5/13 Science: Inclined Planes/Levers Participation 3/ 3, 5, 10 William was very clear when he needed a break today. He
main.php would show me he wanted a break by going to the
classroom and turning on the light, sitting down and saying
break. He participated minimally today but watched for a
while while i demonstrated and explained the simple
machines.
Electives: Music and writing Physical participation 2/ 5, 10 William chose music and writing today. I sang and danced
and pointed to William when it was his turn to blow the horn
and he did, a lot. He also asked for "ing" and each time I
modeled the word and requested him to try it. He did. He
was much more settled and participatory today than the last
10 days.
11/30/13 Language Arts: Writing a letter to Santa participating, writing, 5/ 20, 25, 20, 30 William was very controlling again today. He would come
listening up to me wanting to play, but would then change his mind.
He did participate a little by starting a letter to Santa and
writing dear Santa. He said bye bye or break a lot today.
He was also up a lot walking around and making a lot of
different sounds. He also sat on the chair a few times today
and was less on the floor today. He went to the bathroom
several times today.
11/29/13 Language Arts: Practiced writing participating, writing, 4/25, 25, 20, 10 WIlliam was very controlling today. We practiced writing
thanksgiving words and making turkeys listening thanksgiving words and he helped hang them up. He
asked for several breaks and went on break for long periods
of time. He made a lot of sounds today and when he would
tell me break it sounded like he said back. I would clarify
with the cards if he wanted break or class and most of the
time it was break or he wanted me to go back and still have
class. He asked me to read several times.
11/24/13 Theater: Painting and donating a box participating, taking 3/ 10, 15, 10 Today, WIlliam was very controlling. He was eager to want
to give for a thanksgiving food drive turns, writing, listening paint the box today. I told WIlliam we are going to donate a
painted box to give to my school so they can package food
in it for thanksgiving and give it to families who don't have
enough money to buy food for thanksgiving. I told him
donate means to give. He decided to paint with his fingers
on the box which was really fun. He then decided to wash
his hands and take a break, but would still watch me
paint. After some time taking a break he would show me
he wanted to paint again so we would and then wash his
hands and take another break. Around 2, William wanted to
go outside for recess so we took a walk and then played with
chalk on the driveway for a whole half hour. He did not ask
for a break at all until we came back inside around 2:30. He
only went to the bathroom once today.
Science Participate in creating experiment 3/ 6,4,3 In the beginning, William seemed eager to help pour water
and oil into cups for the first experiment.
He also helped to shake the container and briefly observed
what happened to the water and oil. Soon after he needed a
break. He took about 6 minutes to be by myself and then
was ready to interact once again. He chose to listen to a
book being read, then halfway through needed another
break. When he was ready, he helped to pour the red food
dye into the cup and seemed interested in watching to see
what happened. He needed another break and went into the
other room for a few minutes. When he was ready, he was
preferred to read until it was time for lunch.
Language Arts: Thanksgiving Spelling Participating, Spelling 2/ 5, 5 William was seeking control again today and went to
the potty frequently. I went with a more son rise style
game today (taping things to the wall) and he
participated a lot with taping/spelling the words and
seemed happy to do so.
11/23/13 Science: Potential/Kinetic Energy Participating, taking turns 5/3,7,5,10,2 William was very exclusive and controlling with me as well
today. He would seem interested and show me he wanted
to keep going with the lesson but then quickly show me
he needed a break or go to the bathroom. He went to the
bathroom many many times, even when I explained to
him he could take a break whenever he wanted. He did
seem to comprehend the lesson. At the end we did a cut
and paste worksheet to see what he had learned and he
got almost all of the answers right.
Language Arts: Helping others giving listening, participation, 7/5,20,30 William was very exclusive and controlling today. He
back to the community taking turns, writing, participated a little bit a few times, but often kept going
back to a break. When we first went into the classroom,
he showed me he was ready right away so we practiced
writing. He often wanted a break today. There were times
it was unclear if he wanted a break or wanted me "to go
back because it sounded like back so I would step back
and continue with my lesson, but would say it again. He
also used the bathroom a lot more then usual today. He
went to the bathroom at least four or five times today. He
was making a lot of sounds today and we learned the
words help, helpful and thankful today and read books
about giving back to the community and how great it is
to be thankful and helpful around the time of thanksgiving.
11/21/13 Science: Why things bounce working together 4 / 20,5,4,10 Today william was very exclusive and made it clear he
wanted me to stop with the lesson by telling me a clear
bye-bye and motioning me to move away. He
participated briefly a few times but kept going back to
wanting a break. He was making lots of sounds during
his breaks. During recess we went outside and went for a
long walk and sang together the whole time. He was very
happy while we were singing and continued to make lots
of great sounds.
Language Arts: Reading book reading comprehension 6 / 2, 2, 1, 1 He was very controlling today and didn't want to do a
lesson. He did want to read books. He participated by
writing words from the book and by selection books. He
also selected songs for me to sing. He was VERY
VOCAL and talked a lot. I heard more and different
words and in different pitches than before.
11/17/13 Language Arts: Spelling writing, comprehension 4 / 1, 4, 3, 10 William was very back and forth with being exclusive and
wanting to participate. We drew pictures and tried to
spell the words of what we where drawing. I gave william
choices of which letter sounded like it came next and he
almost always chose the right letter. Then we wrote the
words after we figured out the spelling. He did not want
to do too much writing today and would ask for a break
when I would request him to do it. Towards the end he
brought down the music box so we did some singing and
i wrote down the names of the instruments for him to
choose what we should play while we sang. He seemed
very happy that I was singing with him
Math/Theature Arts Participation, writing, 2/ 5, 5 William asked for break when we first went into the
Taking turns, listening classroom. As I was setting up my lesson, he came
up to me and showed me he was ready. We made
a list of food items to buy for thanksgiving. We circled
them in the advertisements and than we drew pictures of
the item for our store. William watched me draw the
items. He also watched me cut it out and put a dollar
amount for the item. I showed William how we use
money to buy things at the store. He gave me the
amount the item was worth For example, I had corn be
a dollar and told William corn was a dollar and gave
William a dollar to give to me. We also made signs
for the items so WIlliam had a chance to practice writing.
William also showed me which bill was 1.00 and which
was five dollars when I asked him by touching it. He
showed me the right bill for each bill. We played for a
whole hour and than WIlliam was exclusive for ten
minutes. Around 2:00 William looked at me and made a
sound that sounded like he was trying to say "outside" so
I showed him the card that said break since he was on
break and put my hand out for outside and he slapped my
hand. William took me for a walk around the whole block.
11/16/13 Science: Mixing oil and water Participation, 2/ 10, 5 William participated with me when I asked him to and
following steps helped write/draw our observations. He seemed to want
a break at times but would point to class when I gave
him the choice so I gave him more space but kept going
with the lesson.
11/16/13 Language Arts: Nouns Making a noun writing, speaking, 3/5, 10, 5 At first, William was exclusive and wanted some
book taking turns time to himself, but then was interested in
the magazines and gave me a couple looks and
sounds so I introduced my lesson about nouns.
We talked about nouns and cut out some nouns in
the magazines and wrote what they were and what
type of noun and then William wanted to break.
After the break, we made a list of nouns in the
classroom. He took a couple of breaks today and
showed he just wanted to look at the magazines.
11/15/13 Language Arts: Writing Writing; speaking 2 / 1, 2 William stayed interested in writing sheets for 10
minutes. Then he chose reading and easily went back
to writing for 5 minutes. He also let me press on his
mouth and face to to help him say the words. After our
school session, he talked to himself for about 5 minutes
and made a lot of different sounds!
11/14/13 Science: Cloud in a Bottle Taking Turns 2 / 5, 5 William seemed to want to watch and listen to me today
But would not come participate when i called him over
to help. He would participate, however, if i brought the
materials or the paper we were writing on to him. He
wrote several science words with very little help.
Electives: Writing; Reading Speaking 2 / 2, 3 William chose writing and then reading. I found a few
words in both exercises that he found funny and I
modeled saying them, pressed his jaw and lips and
asked him to say them too. He said a few. He spoke
more after squeezes, face prompts or being silly
11/12/13 Math: Magic Counting Jar Participation William was mostly exclusive today and would
participate minimally and then needed another break. He
was more interested in reading the doing the math game
that I had brought.
11/10/13 Language Arts: Fiction/Nonfiction Comprehension 4 /10,10,5,2 William seemed to need more breaks today and longer
breaks. When he was ready for class he made it clear
by looking at me and making a sound. He did a great
job of looking and listening while i read then would help
me circle the answer choice or write the correct
answer. We talked about the difference between fiction
stories and non fiction stories and read some of each
then answered questions about them.
Science; Gravity Participating 1 / 10 Today he met a Michelle, a new teacher, and he stayed
connected and interactive for 50 minutes. He also wrote
a full sentence about gravity with very little help.
Craft and writing: Turkey and wrote Participating, writing, 0 William was very interactive today and participated a lot
what William is thankful for taking turns today. I made a turkey and cut it out. William helped
me tape the turkey onto the plate. I also wrote a few
things William would be thankful for such as family,
friends, clothes, shelter, Mr. Bear and chewing toys. He
pointed to what he wanted to put on turkey feathers for
what he is thankful for. He also wrote what he is
thankful for with little help. We also read two books
and went on a little walk during recess. He was very
giggly today and motivated to write, tape and read. He
did not take any breaks today.
11/9/13 Science: match in a glass, oxygen Listening, taking turns 3/3,7,10 Today william participated with me but took a while to
respond when I requested him to participate. He
seemed to need to take a break first and then would
come over minutes later and do exactly what i had
requested him to do.
Language Arts: Practice writing listening, writing 1 40 William was very exclusive today. He participated a little
bit in the beginning by looking at the words I had written
on the notecards and then practiced writing them. He
also wanted me to read a book more than once so we
also read one of the books in the classroom. He was
very exclusive today. Once in a while he would look
over so when I checked in, he would immediately tell
me to go back.
11/8/13 Science: Mixing different colors to see Listening, taking 2/5, 15 William watched, listened and participated the whole time
what color they come out to be turns, during the experiment. We made educational guesses of
what will happen when we mix retain color together. I had
William show me what colors he wants to use by pointing
to the paint he wanted to use or grabbing it and giving it
to me. William also helped me squeeze the paint into
baggie. One point William showed me he wanted to use
green with yellow. When I asked him what color he
thinks it would turn out to be, he pointed to the green
bottle of paint and was right! It did turn green. He loved
putting the paint into the baggies and mixing them to see
what colors it turned out to be. He was motivated for
paint and singing but not so much motivated for reading
or writing today. One point he wanted to break but kept
looking over and wanted singing so I sang from the table.
11/7/13 Science: Chromatography/pigments Listening, taking turns 1/ 5 William watched and listened the whole time while i was
separating pigments with filter paper Explaining and demonstrating the experiment. He would
sometimes look away or say buh, but when i gave him
the choice of class or break he kept choosing class so i
kept going with he experiment but gave him more space.
He participated minimally when i requested a few times
but was more interested in watching and listening today.
Language Arts: Election Day Writing, listening 2/10, 5 William participated almost the whole time with me
today. He listened to two books one called Vote and
the other called Duck for President. He helped make a
poster for Vote for William and choose to put how he
promised to give free squeezes by pointing two his
choice. He also learned three new words Vote, Election,
and Ballot. We started a word wall and I let him choose
which words he wanted to hang up by pointing. He
pointed to ballot and vote. We also practiced writing
vote and ballot. He had big smiles when we were
writing, made the poster, and when we made the word
wall. I also tested his comprehension by asking him
what we need to vote. I had on one paper the word
ballot and another the word hot dog. William pointed to
hot dog and started giggling. I also asked which book
was about a duck voting and had the names of the
books on separate papers. He pointed to the right one.
I also ended it with a fun question asking him which book
he liked the best and he pointed to Duck for President.
Towards the end, William was being a big love bug and
wanted a lot of squeezes and hugs! He was very giggly
today and was very motivated to read and write today.
Electives: reading and music Listening; language 1 / 20 We are offering electives (art, music, reading, writing)
after lunch for 1 hour. Today he chose reading and
music. The book he chose was on voting; fun but dry.
Soon he chose music and we worked on saying the word
"ing" for sing. He said it many times, even unprompted.
11/6/13 Language Arts: Voting Writing 2 / 5, 5
Science: Fun with apples Taking turns 3 / 3, 5, 5
11/3/13 Language Arts: Writing and Illustrating Writing, Taking Turns 2/3,1 William participated the whole time with me today. He
our own book helped decide what the story would be about by
pointing to his choices. He also wrote several of the
words in the book and helped illustrate the pictures with
me. He had big smiles while we were reading the
finished product together at the end.
Science: density of air; water tension following directions; 1 / 5 He listened to the entire Magic School Bus book about
book on human body listening the human body; he listened as I read the story as well
as the extra bits around the sides of the pages
11/2/13 Science: density rainbow following directions 2/ 4, 10 William participated with the experiment and then was
exclusive at the end before going out for recess. After
We practiced writing some science words and he wrote
the word density on his own (with me holding his hand)
without looking at the spelling.
Language Arts: reading and writing practice writing, 2 / 5, 3 William did a great job writing and showing me he
reading comp listened to our books. He answered my questions
correctly by choosing the right answer
10/31/13 Language Arts: world series taking turns 5 / 3,2,3,3, 2 Today he was very motivated for WRITING
Science: making a witches brew taking turns,
following procedure 6 /2,2,5,5,3,5 Today William was very clear when he needed a break
and when he wanted to participate. He seemed to enjoy
the experiment and participated with a smile but then
was very exclusive and told me break when he needed
one.
Elective: painting and reading choosing elective 2 / 10 William chose to paint and then read. This was the 1st
time we had this class and he did well.
He
seemed to need to take a break first and then would
come over minutes later and do exactly what i had
requested him to do.

over so when I checked in, he would immediately tell
me to go back.
Soon he chose music and we worked on saying the word

and words that have to do with baseball on the wall.
He tried to say ball a lot today and was very talkative and
giggly. At recess, he wanted to go for a walk and drum
and sing about baseball. When we got back, he got the
chalk and showed me he wanted me to write with the
chalk. He was very motivated for me to write ball and
baseball and switched the colors on me of what color he
wanted me to use. He also liked when I drew a baseball
and a ball.
Science: making volcano and bottle rocket following instructions William really listened and followed instructions well
10/19/13 Science: the leaf cycle of change participation, working together William stayed present with me the entire time today
during both science and recess. He seemed to enjoy the
activity. he helped me gather leaves of different shades,
we read about the leaf cycle and why leaves change and
created a wreath by putting the leaves on order of the
cycle of change. he helped with each step. During
recess he wanted to take a walk and kept smiling at me
along the way. At one point he linked his arm with mine
and we continued to walk like that.
Language Arts: Halloween Verbs Listening, taking turns, William was very interactive today. We wrote some
participating verbs down and than he hung them up on the wall.
He was very motivated to writing verbs down and
and hanging them up. He was also motivated to
read today. He wanted to read a lot today. He went
to the bathroom three times today and took two very
short breaks when he was exclusive.
